September 16 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 6:00 pm on Sunday and Wednesday, repeating until September 30, 2020

Join us September 9, 16, 23 and 30 from 6-7:30 for a Zoom conversation with Stephanie Heglund and Jeana Pynes, to discuss James Baldwin’s 1974 novel, “If Beale Street Could Talk.” Set in Harlem in the early 1970s, this novel follows 19-year Tish and her 22-year-old boyfriend Fonny. After their engagement, Tish becomes pregnant. As the story progresses, Fonny is falsely accused of raping a woman, arrested and jailed.

It is Baldwin’s first novel focused exclusively on a black love story and only novel narrated by a woman. It explores black life, centering on the emotional bonds holding two African American families together. The paperback novel (published by Vintage International Edition, October, 2006) is available on Amazon for $9.99. Its free with an Audible subscription. We will also have a couple copies to lend.

We will break the book into four sections of approximately 50 pages for discussion.
